Catch up @ the South Plains Fair!

So apparently I've been busy. =)  Busy having fun I suppose.

Saturday we had a great time with Grand Funk Railroad.  Very nice guys and entertaining too.  I believe there's only one original member of the band still with them, the drummer, Don.  He was nice as could be and man could he play.  In their closing number "An American Band" he wore an exaggerated Uncle Sam's hat and celebrated in style.  After a quick after show meal they were out of here.  The crew couldn't believe how quickly the trailer was loaded and out the door.  Just the way we like it. =)

Sunday we had the day off.  I spent the day with my friend Jan.  She is the runner for me at the fair and always takes care of anything we need, including homemade ice cream.  YUMMY!  We had a great steak dinner at this little place called Bryan's, saw 'The Help, even visited the fair to stop by and see Mickey the monkey.  We then hit up bingo....no we didn't win anything but we sure had a good time.  I used computers for the first time.  They were so much fun and made it even easier to play.  Jan enjoyed seeing the typically craziness of Bingo and the women and their pull tabs.

Jan and I with Mickey

Monday was such an easy day.  We were originally supposed to have Easton Corbin this night but he had to cancel due to illness.  Within 12 hours of the potential cancellation we had Sawyer Brown booked and ready to rock.  And that they did.  They still have a great show full of hits over 30 years.  I saw them in college and look forward to working with them again soon!  The crowd was smaller but mighty.  We had about 1500 which wasn't bad for only 2 days of promotion.

Sawyer Brown
After the show we got to celebrate the Sparks' anniversary.  Couldn't have been better than spending it with the Secret 5. =)  Then a couple of us made it a night on the town by visiting a local college bar...yes we got carded and wrist banded.  You know it's a good night when you end up at Denny's at 3:30A and walk home which is right next door. =)
Secret 5 with an Absinthe toast

Tuesday's are always fun at the fair cause it's Tejano night.  Everyone is always very friendly and typically easy to work with.  It just drives me crazy because they aren't bands that I book which means I have no control of what happens.  I turn in to the building manager on this night and just make sure they have what they need and that the building doesn't burn down.  Ha!  It's always fun because the crowd brings about 100 strollers.  Like those little kids need to be a loud concert but stroller patrol is always on it.  We did have the instance of one of the band members blowing a few speakers because he disconnected a cable when he wasn't supposed to.  Never a dull moment folks.
And tonight's production meeting night aka all the grounds acts get together to have a few beverages and eat some yummy food.  I'm going to crash that party and hopefully go out again tonight. =)

Loverboy is up tomorrow.  It'll be a rock n roll good time!

Kevin Fowler in the Star state

I'm on my third day in the good ole' city of Lubbock.  I love visiting this city because I get to see great friends and working at the fair is very different but fun!  It's a county fair that is ran by a fair manager.  The staff is very small but mighty.  They do a great job at keeping the fairgrounds in line throughout the year and the fair.  At this fair it's different because I oversee the entire building that the concerts take place in.  I'm in charge of directing security, ticket takers, etc.  If a toilet overflows guess who gets to call maintenance? =)  It's a change from the other fairs I do but I love it just the same.  Plus I get to work with one of my co-workers--Mark "Sparky" Sparks and many of his grounds acts that I'm lucky to call friends.

We kicked off the fair with a fabulous day of weather.  It was looking like a great day!  Kevin Fowler was our star of the night.  Don't know who he is? Yeah, me neither.  I'm mean I've heard of him but haven't heard his music on the radio at home.  Texas is another ball of wax when it comes to country music.  They have their own music charts (how artist's singles are ranked and therefore popularity is based) and their own circle of acts.  Sometimes those acts break into mainstream (i.e. Pat Green, Eli Young Band, Willie Nelson, etc.).  However, the show was decent and he definitely loves to entertain the crowd.  They like to be entertained as well since about 500 of them rushed the stage when he told everyone to "come on down"!

On another note- I'm now four in on cancellations this year on the Mud and Dust tour.  We were supposed to have Easton Corbin here on Monday.  I was looking forward to it.  Apparently Easton is extremely ill and had to cancel a show with the 'big boss' today at the Oklahoma State Fair.  In turn we immediately became worried about the Lubbock date.  After another day of scurrying around trying to find a replacement, determining with the fair manager and sponsoring radio station who'd they'd like to have replace him, and receiving the official yet regretful word of cancellation from his management, we will now be having Sawyer Brown on Monday.  Now I'm really looking forward to the show. =)  I saw SB in college a couple of times and LOVED the show.  It will be a great one!  Now, NO more cancellations for the rest of the year!!

Lips and Barefoot Bluejeans

We wrapped up the 2011 Great New York State Fair with two great days!

Sunday we had a very diverse day on the stage.  We started the morning with a Catholic Mass, then a burger cookoff, a Food Network chef demo with The Neeley's and the a rock band named...Hinder!

The Neeley's were extremely personable and friendly.  They were meeting and greeting everyone.  They caught word that there was a lady that had been there since 7AM with the slight chance she might meet them.  They had me bring her back to their dressing room to meet them.  That was incredible.  It just made that woman's year.  They definitely were a little edgy on the live performance.  Jenna happened to drop a few explicitives.  Her husband explained later that there's a reason their show is taped...for editing. =)  Their recipes were amazing and I look foward to using them at the new house.

Hinder was such a great act to work with.  You wouldn't think that a rock band would be so organized and nice. =)  They put on a great show and had about 15,000 people to enjoy it.  I had a great conversation with the tour manager after the show and it explained why they were as great as they were.  He doesn't believe in being needy and divas.  He impressed on his guys that they should be glad to have a job.  I found it very inspirational!  I hope to work with them again in the future.
Funny story** I was quizzing a few of the Court staff afterwards on what the capital of Kentucky is.  After several guesses and 15mins the lead singer for Hinder walks by.  The security guard asks him..."hey what's the capital of Kentucky?"  He replies quickly..."Frankfort".  When I applauded him for his correct answer he says "hey I did graudate high school!"  We found it quite commical that he knew but no one else did.

On to the LAST day!!  Everyone was definitely ready for this, probably just as much as me.  I love both bands that we had booked for today.  One because I knew it'd be an easy day, but I love both of their shows.  Starship with Mickey Thomas was one of the first shows I worked on the fair circuit.  I mainly love it just because they sing a song about me. =)  They were very easy to work with (except for the picky eaters that can only eat whole wheat bread, no cheese or lettuce, no sesame seeds).  Mickey is so very friendly.  He even called me on the way from the airport to say hello and to ask for a liquor run.  LOL  NEVER had that happen.  We usually close the curtains to their dressing rooms to give them privacy.  They opened them and said they didn't want to feel secluded.  Of course we couldn't get away with another gorgeous day and were impacted by yet again another hurricane (this one from the south).  It has rained all day.  I'm happy with rain as long as their no wind and lightning.  Prayers were definitely answered on that one.  Mickey still put on an awesome show and we had a great crowd considering the weather.  The setlist was hit after hit!

Mickey Thomas on stage
Jake Owen always puts on an awesome show!  His crew is such a pleasure to work with and he is honestly one of the best performers.  With the rain continuing into the night I would have assumed the crowd would stay at home.  Boy, was I wrong.  They were here and having a great time.  Jake walked on the stage barefoot in support of his current single "Barefoot Bluejean Night".  He entertained the 7,000+ crowd by working the uncovered, downstage extention in the rain!  He's now jetting off to New York for GMA in the morning.  He'll be announcing the CMA nominees with The Band Perry--be sure to check this guy out.  When he makes it big I want to be on the road with them. =)

I also got to walk around the fair today.  I ended up finding a wall painting for the new family room.  We got to see all the sights including the sand sculpture.  It was a great tribute to the 911 tragedy.

I cannot even explain how excited I am to get home tomorrow.  Wheels down at 12:50 and I'll be hitting the ground running on the new house.  Closing is 9:30A tomorrow morning.  By this time in two weeks I'll be moved in.  So watch for the blog updates on that before the next saga of the Mud and Dust Tour continues in Lubbock, TX at the South Plains Fair!

Charlie Wilson 'drops the bomb' and The Script 'breakeven'

While we're rejoicing that we only have two more days we are reflecting on two very good days!

David Nail, new country act was with us Friday afternoon.  Very easy group to work with and a good show.  A little more laid back for my tastes but he did entertain the small crowd he drew.  We had a gorgeous day with sun and a light breeze.  Mother Nature was just teasing us.

I got to stop by over at the Grandstand and see my Lady A buddies.  Always a pleasure to see great acts that we work with from show to show.  Clay had a great day over on the other side of wonderland with them.

Charlie Wilson's crew came in early to start preparing his wardrobe.  I guess I didn't understand what the show entailed until I saw it.  Holy cow!  What a production.  They had probably 20 costume changes.  From marching band getups, to battery lit suits, to angel wings...it was very entertaining.
A fraction of Charlie and dancers wardrobe backstage

Charlie Wilson show

He entertained an estimated crowd of 7,000 with his fabulous show.  He was a very big star as well ( ;) ) we had to evacuate the backstage area as he was walking to and from his dressing room.

Today (Saturday- Day 10) we got to work with what I would say are two of the greatest bands in the biz.  Hot Chelle Rae and The Script are amazing!  It turned out that they are actually on tour together.  We didn't know that when we booked the show.  It made it very easy.  Just like a "normal" concert but with a 5 hour intermission.  Both are very mainstream pop but with a little edge.  Hot Chelle Rae drew a little younger crowd but The Script brought in the older teenagers.  So, thankfully, the screams weren't quite as high pitched!  I get to work with HCR again in Lubbock in a couple of weeks and am definitely looking forward to it.  I loved The Script.  Band and crew are all from Ireland.  Typically when they have accents they're a pain in the ass to work with.  However, these guys were amazingly professional and polite.  Such a great day and the show was awesome too.  There were about 10,000 for their show and it was very elaborate with a great lighting setup.
The Script crowd

I had the pleasure of going over the the Grandstand and seeing my buddies with Sugarland.  These guys have had a tough couple of weeks since the accident at the Indiana State Fair.  It was a very surreal moment driving over and seeing the trucks backed up to the stage just like in IN.  I talked with a few of the crew guys and they are still just a mess.  The fact that these guys are still on the road, not cancelling shows and keeping their fans happy are incredible.  They should all be in therapy and I wouldn't be surprised if they packed a psychiatrist on the bus.  I can't imagine what they've been through and are going through now.

Remember my cool photo with Mickey the baboon from the Lubbock Fair last year?  We got to visit with his little brother (LOL) today.  It was a great time.  He's almost like a spider monkey.  He would loose his footing and would grab on with his tail...as monkies are supposed to.  So cute!  For those of you that know my love of monkeys know how fun this was for me!

We're hoping the weather holds out for these last two days!

Baking, Mars & BTR

We've had a busy couple of days here at Chevy Court!  Wednesday we were over the halfway hump.  You can tell because everyone is getting very tired...and grouchy :)  For the most part everyone is still playing friendly.  Wednesday we had a HUGE crowd all day long.  Buddy Valastro "The Cake Boss" came in on private jet and did a cake demonstration along with a book signing and meet and greet.  He was such a nice guy!  He brought some of his family including nephew and cousin that sold merchandise for 8 hours straight.  The stage demonstration wasn't as huge as I thought would have been.  He brought up several groups of people to decorate cupcakes.  Alec Baldwin and Jerry Springer were also on site doing meet and greets.

Bruno Mars was up next.  What a production, on stage and behind the scenes.  The crew was pretty good to work with.  Some were needy and the dressing room girl couldn't figure out what she needed.  She ended up sending the runners to the same place three times...including making returns.  CRAZY
We had a HUGE crowd.  They definitely set a record crowd with 35,000 people!  It was packed side to side.  Bruno is a teeny tiny guy!  His fans decided to stick around until about midnight.  He and the band in turn decided to tease them.  That was fun trying to keep all the little kiddies contained.  The show was so so and was really short.  However, I guess he doesn't have a ton of material to cover much more than an hour.

Thursday morning led in to a great day with Steel Magnolia and Big Time Rush.  Given SM was staying at the same hotel as me I just brought them in with me.  The lead singers Josh and Meg were coming in for an early interview with Bridgestreet.  The show is shot from the Chevy Court stage every weekday morning.  They are a great bunch to work with.  Very organized, pleasant and talented.  They had a good crowd even though half of them were just there early to save seats for BTR.  Big Time Rush is a band of Nickoloden tv stars so it was a ton of screaming little girls.  They were very pleasant but again had a hired idiot on staff that made things amusing.  They also decided to tease the crowd.  Except this time we had about 200 little girls waiting around and screaming for them to come out and sign.  Instead they climbed on top of the bus and waved.

A little bit of country and motown

We had a wonderful day at the New York State Fair today!  Working with great acts always makes the day go well and quick.  I love those days. =)  It also helped that I got 9 hours of sleep last night.

We kicked off the morning with Midtown Men.  What a great group of guys!  They are the original four of the Jersey Boys broadway show.  All of them have had many successes outside of the show as well.  I actually saw one of them in I believe an episode of Law and Order last fall.  It was great to see the reaction they got not only from the crowd but everyone backstage as well.  Ronnie Dunn's folks arrived early and we thrilled to see them and the show.  They do songs from Frankie Vallie all the way to The Beach Boys and reminisce about their time on broadway.  With their huge crowd of 6,000 and a funny, great vocal and band show they definitely topped my list for the best 2:00PM show we've had here in the three years we've been booking for the New York State Fair.
Midtown Men grooving on stage
We quickly loaded in Ronnie Dunn and were ready for the 8:00PM show.  They are a great crew to work with and I'm glad we had good weather for them, unlike in Iowa.  Ronnie is very down to earth and is happy to be doing a grass roots project.  He was taken back when he first walked on stage and saw the size of the crowd.  Another great crowd of 10,000!  Between here and the Journey show at the grandstand we brought in over 20,000 people today.  Ronnie puts on a great show with hits from B&D and his own.

Catch up time =)

Saturday was a great day at the fair!  We got to work with two very professional setups with Curtis Stone and Trace Adkins.  Yes, we're multi-functional.  TV newscasts, ABC previews of their upcoming shows, country stars and CHEFS =)  Curtis Stone was such a pleasure to work with as was his assistant Steven.  I was really worried we weren't going to get Curtis here.  He got stuck in Chicago with a delayed flight of over 4 hours.  We were up until about midnight waiting to find out if he got an earlier flight and arrived.  Thankfully, he did.  Steven and the fair's chef had spent the day before getting the food, dishes, pot, pans...ya know all the things you need to cook, together and ready for the demonstration.  Chevy Court turned in to a national cooking stage for three hours.  Curtis is as cute as everyone thinks he is but he very tall as well. =)  As Steven was scurrying around I asked if there was anything I could do to help.  He said "in 5 mins get Curtis dressed."  Yes, he sure did and I had witnesses.  LOL  Unfortunately, Curtis was able to dress himself without any help.  The show was very entertaining and comical.

Prepping for Curtis Stone
Then we had a great time with Trace's crew.  They are a great group of guys.  With a video wall, full set, and backline we dumped two trucks and were set in 1.5hrs.  Record timing for a show like that.  The stage crew here is just fabulous! (as well as the crew in the back that I work with)  Trace is a great guy and another big boy.  He had to duck to get in the door of the building.  Of course I loved the show...of what I actually watched.  He drew a huge crowd of 16,000!

Trace Adkins on Chevy Court
Sunday was a rough day.  We weren't really affected by the hurricane but she definitely stretched her wrath with wind and rain on this day.  With 1.1" of rain in about 15 hours we were all soaked rats by the end of the night.  Allstar Weekend was a bunch of young poppy stars.  It didn't help that they were all hungover and eating us out of house and home.  =)  They did a good show but unfortunately the crowd didn't turn out.  The 200 or so young, screaming, crying girls that were there braving the weather really enjoyed though.
Next up were KC & The Sunshine Band.  Now, our stage is a painted concrete base.  While it had been raining all day the stage was definitely wet on the front end.  We knew if the weather broke (as predicted) we could get it dried up.  Unfortunately, Irene had other plans and we were stuck with the rain up until showtime.  Given KC's show is extremely choreographed we knew having a 60+ year old man dancing and all his lady dancers up there the stage would not be in good condition.  We decided at the last minute to buy carpet...a huge piece of 40'x12' to cover the front half of the stage.  Carpet arrived, went down, taped and it was perfect.  I mentioned to the crew that they didn't bring the Sunshine...15mins before the show, the sun came out.  Go figure!
KC brought the...carpet

And now were here to the present, Monday.  I had been dreading this day ever since the date was booked.  Yes, I'm talking about REO Speedwagon.  They have a specific regimen they stick with on the schedule of their day.  This stage does conform to specific.  With a lot of back and forth I knew it wasn't going to be a good day.  Fortunately, it turned out better than I thought (I tell ya those morning prayers of..Please God just get me through this day work!).  I got my early morning greeting of screaming and complaining but once we got them in just so we could sit around for 4 hours in the afternoon proved my point.  They could have conformed and it would have went well.   We did the 2:00PM with The Glenn Miller Band which was a perfect fit for Senior Day.  They were great to work with and put on a great show.

REO made it on stage (10mins late...typical rock stars.  I had to put Kevin's bracelet on before he could go on stage) and when they came off I heard something I've never heard before.  The guys were freaking out over the crowd.  I'm pretty sure they stuck another song in because they were having fun.  They were seriously have emotional breakdowns because of the crowd, the size of the crowd and the fact that K. C. could say on stage, in his own words, that he's better than Journey.  The show was great and they sound really good.  I can say I'm not sad to watch them go.  Hopefully in an hour I can be home, in bed and sleep for 9 hours. =)  Tomorrow is going to be a blast with Midtown Men and Ronnie Dunn!

Musicians, Fairgoers, and Hurricanes....OH MY!

Catching up on yesterday!  We had opening day of the fair and all in all it went pretty smooth.  We welcomed The Pointer Sisters and Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers.  Both bands were an absolute pleasure to work with.
Ruth Pointer is the original sister of the bunch and for 60+ she looks amazing!  That is only because of her strict eating regimen.  She weighs all of her food to make sure she's eating the right portions and the best foods.  Imagine doing that while on the road and at fairs. =)  They had a great crowd of 4,000 that loved the show.

Next up was Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers.  These guys could not have been more easier to work with!  Very laid back southern men.  They even tipped the caterers.  You never have that!  Larry was cutting up and laughing with us the entire night.  They had a very laid back crowd.  Just the way we like it!

We even had a couple of logistical items thrown at us the day before.  We squeezed in a dance competition with 'Moves Like Jagger'.  Two people did their own dance to Maroon5's 'Moves Like Jagger'.  The winner won tickets to the concert in the grandstand.
Then we had to squeeze a third band on for 45mins- Scarlett Endings.  Thankfully we had two bands that were very accommodating and easy so the day went very smooth.

I definitely got to celebrate my birthday well!  The staff of Chevy Court surprised me during the show with a cake, card and singing candle.  Blubbering me started crying.  HA it was too sweet.  The special events direction brought me flowers.  I was also surprised when I got back to the hotel with an edible arrangement from my good friend, Erin!  When the desk attendant saw the HB balloon he started serenading me.  While it sucks to be on the road on my birthday, I'm glad to be with friends here in NY!  Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes whether by phone, text or FB!!
I got to top off the night with watching Maroon5 on the Grandstand.  Nothing like the Moves of Adam to set the night.

Maroon 5- New York State Fair Grandstand
---Friday---
I'm combining these two since I'm a day behind =)
Today we had Gym Class Heros and Three Dog Night.  Again a fairly easy day.  Gym Class Heros were a little rough around the edges but were still a pleasure to work with.  We couldn't get them to leave...literally.  Travie McCoy was out wondering around the fairgrounds and left his band mates in the van waiting on him.  LOL  I was finally able to chase them out about 7PM...3 hours after the norm.  As I was listening to the show...from the comfort of my office....I heard a song I recognized and knew what was coming next.  The song has the F-word several times.  Normally in a fair, family friendly environment they don't use excessive cursing.  I waited to hear it...and of course it was there!  After the second time I huffed it out to front of house and told the tour manager he was pushing the line.  After that song he was fine.  The excuse was that the track has the word on it...so he knew he had to sing it too....RIGHT  I wasn't born yesterday...well maybe yesterday 28years ago. =)

Next up we moved in Three Dog Night.  Very easy guys to work with!  No complaining, no demands, love it.  They have a huge crowd of 11,000+.  Love these nights with the huge crowds!

**Weather update** At this point we're looking okay with the hurricane.  We'll be praying for those that are on the immediate coast and those that are dealing with the effects.  We're west enough that it looks like we might have rain and some wind gusts but nothing terrible.  Now, if she decides to shift west about 30miles..then we might have issues.  For now we'll just play it by ear.  Now the fun part is the flights.  Several bands have been flying in and all of them have seen delays.  Curtis Stone is/was due in at 10:30PM tonight for his show tomorrow at 2:00PM.  Right now the flight has been delayed until 2:30AM.  My guess is it will be cancelled.  We're hoping that he'll be able to get in tomorrow.  Otherwise, we'll have some big problems.  Looks like we may have to carter him from Chicago.  Anybody want to pick him up and drive him the 13hours?

Mrs. Jackson...if you're nasty

Okay...so this is a couple days late...maybe even a few more than that. =)  I decided to take the night after the last show to hang out with my Iowa family and then got caught up in the clean up and travel activities the following days.  I'm now in NY but I'll write more about that in the next edition.

We wrapped up the Iowa State Fair with one heck of a show (or lack of I guess).  Janet Jackson....I was really looking forward to this one.  I even made the choice to skip "Here Come the Mummies" because I knew I'd be able to see them before I could Janet again.  Unfortunately, I didn't get to see one second of either show.  The day tended to be a little on the needy side.  However, everyone was extremely nice.  We were all exhausted (I definitely could have used another nap (:  ) but it turned out to be a smooth day.  We had a few hiccups throughout the show but they were easily solved.  Video didn't have the proper hookup to use the side screens that were the only way 5,000 of the patrons could see the show.  Plus, the sound was awful.  When I had a split second to step out front to watch the show I had to deal with the video issue and then settlement.  Fun!  All in all we had 7,000+ folks that were having a ball!

Now here's the best part of the night**two years ago Ava and I ended up doing a mashed potato attack on Brett and Kurt--the maintenance guys backstage.  Last year we never got around to it but it was definitely due this year.  We saved a full gallon bag of mashed potatoes from the first day's leftovers. =)  The last night I found them with my name on them sitting on my desk.  When the guys were in the bunker we plopped several handfuls on each seat of their gator.  It was sitting in the dark so the thought was that they wouldn't see it before sitting down.  Hehe...I then coated the steering wheel with them as well..just for added measure.  It took about a half hour for them to find it and honestly I had already forgotten.  While I didn't know they had found it, I was getting some funny looks from that way.  After talking with Ava I knew that they had found the seats full but hadn't noticed the steering wheel until the gripped it. LOL  Anyway, so that's over and I'm back in my office sitting at my computer.  I notice that my seat was wet!!  I stand up and feel underneath my jacket (that was lying in the chair) and lo and behold there's the mashed potatoes!  They had smushed into the fabric of the seat and my jacket.  I even washed the jacket and it smells like fabric softener and potatoes.  HAHA  You can't imagine the profanity and screaming that came out of my office.  So they finally after three years, got me back.

After a slow day on Monday of packing things up, saying my goodbyes and a fabulous dinner with the audio folks Iowa was officially over.  I always miss this one the most but look forward to the next year.

Fireball

Well another title that suites two parts of the day.  This day couldn't have gone smoother with Reba and Jerrod Niemann.  I was already looking forward to this day just because Reba is one of my favorite artists of all time.  Everyone was laid back, easy to work with, a not one bit demanding (once we got past the point that Reba was NOT going to have a police escort).  It certainly made my day when I was able to take a nap while sitting outside.  Everyone had caught up and let's say...I wasn't the only one. =)  I got sit and listen of the production managers experiences with Reba over the past 20years.  She must be a good boss if you can deal with her that long.  The weather once again went right around us and not a drop fell from the sky.
I did make a smart move today.  I usually spend one of my days "off" sitting at the laundromat for 2-3 hours getting the clothes washed for the next go around.  I decided this time I was going to take the bulk of it to a fluff and fold.  I was happy I did!  For $15 they washed, dried and folded.  WHoohoo!
After a little conflict with a local radio station we got focused on the meet and greets.  One of my favorite parts of the day.   I met Jerrod before we started his.  What a nice guy!  He gave me a huge bear hug to thank me for bringing him. I didn't have the heart to tell him it wasn't me but gladly accepted his appreciation.  =)  After a quick run with his folks we then got Reba's started.  All 50 of them filed through in 15mins.  I got to take the photos (yay me! lol) and they just kept shuffling them.  I spoke with her afterwards and thanked her for coming back to the fair.  It's been 10years since she played the Iowa State Fair.  This is one of the few she's playing this year.
Jerrod ripped through his set, great show!  I tried everything I could to make sure I could watch the majority of Reba's show.  I succeeded!  Our video guru was amazed that I knew the words to almost every song.

**Photo belongs to video guru**

Reba McEntire- Iowa State Fair
So why is the title Fireball you ask?  She changed into the infamous red dress for the encore- "Fancy".  The smashing, sparkly dress looks awesome on stage.  As she was taking her bow and saying goodnight we cued the fireworks.  Another quick change and she was in the van and off to the airport.  Yes, she flew private.  I wish I could call my assistants and say "oh yeah, I think we'll be leaving an hour late or so" on my choice not the airlines.  The fireworks masters ended up added a bit to their show tonight.  Fireballs!  Huge puffs of fire coming up out of buckets.  The heat off of those things scared me to death.  Glad I didn't park to close.
During Reba's ride to the airport she and her husband both told the driver that they want to be back before another 10years.  I'll definitely have to get the boss on that!

Moves Like Jagger

Dang I'm tired...=)  Today was a crazy, busy but really good day with Maroon 5 and Train.  Usually when I arrive at the grandstand people are just starting to trickle off their buses.  Boy, not today.  As soon as I stepped out of the van they started coming at me.  From setting the dressing rooms, to taking the entire hallway of the bunker and making it look like a garage sale for production.  And then they were moved in.  With a road crew of 100 the tour can take up quite the space.

I really can't even tell you how I spent my day because it was a complete blur.  I didn't have anyone yelling at me so that means it was a good day.  The fun stuff didn't really start happening until just prior to meet and greet time.  The "famous" folks started appearing.  It was kind of like where's Waldo...everyone would say they had seen Adam..I was never in the right place at the right time. =)  The "seriously are you kidding" event of the day was when the production assistants told me that Maroon 5's dressing room trailer was not getting air and they thought they had thrown a breaker.  With all the crap they had plugged in I can see why.  The electricians check it out and turns out they had taped the ducts shut in one room so they could have a yoga room.  In turn overloading and shutting the air conditioner off.  Some of these are real geniuses I tell you.  Then they complained for two hours about it not cooling off.  After yet another inspection turns out the thing was had freezed up.  Guess they got their yoga room.
Finally during the meet and greet I saw Adam and he is even better looking than he appears on tv.  I know everyone was wanting to know that.  Hehe  We got through our probably largest meet and greet ever with two going at the same time and over 100 people.  Security handled it with ease!  I was ready to get this show on the road.  We knew we were looking at a four hour show ending at midnight.  The opener PJ Morton (he replaced Gavin DeGraw, who was injured in a fight last week) did a great job.  The crowd really enjoyed him.  Next up Maroon 5 took the stage in their all white matching ensemble.  And then came the 2nd most bizarre request I've ever had.  The production assistant asked for three buckets full of lukewarm water....I wasn't sure I should ask why.  Thankfully she elaborated quickly.  She informed me that Adam wanted to take a "ghetto bath" immediately after coming off stage.  He must not believe in indoor plumbing?  While I thought we would at least get to watch the activity they ended up taking him between the dressing rooms and doused him with water.  Reports were that he had striped off the stage clothes...again wrong place, wrong time.  Wonder what other crazy things the assistants have to do??  I was highly disappointed that I didn't get to see one bit of their show.  I could hear it and enjoyed singing along to many, many hits.  Hopefully when we have them in NY I can pop over to the grandstand.

Train took the stage next and they put on a great show!  I sat in monitor world for most of it (except for the few calls of...we need you backstage...I need this.. I was just trying to watch the show!!!).  Pat did way too many clothes changes but all in all it was good.  He even setup a proposal during Marry Me..aww very original.  Thank goodness she said yes.  When talking with the tour manager afterwards he explained his concern that one day they won't say yes.  They know it's coming and that guy is going to be embarrassed as hell in front of 10,000 people.  You know I didn't even mention how cute Pat is...well probably because he's not so much.
Now the show is done, gear is being loaded up and we're waiting for the 15billion people that need to take showers.  I'm definitely looking forward to a nice, easy day tomorrow with a late load in, easy crew and good show with Reba.

A short note on the house front...I had picked out some carpet before I left town.  I had Lowe's and a local company both come out and message.  Thanks to my realtor they were able to do that Tuesday.  Then thanks to my great friend, Erin she went and picked up the carpet sample from Lowe's and took it to the local company.  Turns out they are going to beat the price by like $1500!  He has selected the carpet he think is the most comparable and has shipped three samples to me.  So tomorrow I'll be picking out carpet for my house that's 600miles away.  My boss says I'm spoiled...I think I'm just lucky.  =)

Boot, Scootin', Boogie on outta hur...

We had a great day with a relaxed and professional team.  You know it's a good day when I received the will call envelopes from the tour managers before 2:30pm!  Ronnie Dunn and Steel Magnolia definitely have the groove going with their road crews.  We were set on the stage and ready to go in plenty of time to open doors for 7:00PM  We knew the crowd was going to be light with ticket sales but I never assumed we'd have the crowd we did.
**Funny story of the day--Steel Magnolia rolls up and they start piling off the bus.  This tiny little, adorable puppy jets off.  Of course I had to bet him!!  He was sticking just close enough to his owner..which I thought was a band member.  He comes up and we're talking about the puppy.  He introduces himself as Josh with a cute little grin.  We part ways.  Later in the evening someone is referring to the lead singers of Steel Magnolia...oh yes, of course the male was Josh....guess I need to start paying attention to who the artists really are. =)
**Not so funny story of the day-- We get SM on stage and they start cranking out the tunes.  There was some impeding weather that we were hoping would just stay as rain.  Mother Nature, as always, had a different plan.  It's dumping buckets from time to time and then the rain stops completely, wind and all.  Followed shortly by some lightning far off in the distance.  Trying to work with the tour manager to coordinate a plan the lightning gets closer.  And then it's RIGHT ON TOP OF US.  We were seriously hoping we weren't going to have to put that plan of evacuation we just reviewed two days ago, in to action.  We ended up evacuating the track area given those folks were sitting on metal bleachers.  You'd think they'd move with an encouraging announcement right...yeah not so much.  They soon figured out what they were sitting on and that it lightning struck they weren't going to be sticking around for My Maria.  After about an hour of some tough decisions as to hold off, go on, wait, wait some more...we knew we couldn't take any chances.  We held Ronnie's show for an hour.  Unbelievably, his die hard fans (about 90%) in the crowd stuck around.  He put on a great show!  Most of it was Brooks and Dunn hits sprinkled with a little of his newest singles and album.  I know I sure had a great time and it seemed like the folks that sat through the rain, lightning and wind did too.

Oh another note-- you may have heard or seen that yet another stage collapsed today.  It was over in Belgium and by the photos I've seen the stage looked like it was constructed of toothpicks.  More than likely the reason it was in our news was because of the Indiana State Fair tragedy.  I cannot fathom why this is happen unless Mother Nature is just sick of hearing live music??  She's seriously upset with someone.

Listen to the Music

I haven't blogged for the past couple of days because we've been dark in the Grandstand.  Sunday we were supposed to have a sold out show with Sugarland.  I think that day everyone was in a complete daze.  I can't even fathom the terror all parties at the Indiana State Fair were facing that day and still today.  This tragic event will forever change our business.  For good or bad it will never be the same.  Given we had the day off Mark (sound/lights expert), Dale (video guru) and myself went and had dinner.  Dale treated us to toast to those victims and the tragic event.  Unfortunately, Sugarland was not able to work out coming on Monday.  I don't blame them one bit.  It's my understanding that they are extremely traumatised as to be expected.

We then headed back over to the fairgrounds for a front row seat of the memorial fireworks.  The Iowa State Fair decided to dedicate their fireworks show to the victims of the accident.  It was a extremely somber moment as the show was meant for the 11,000 people that would have been in the Grandstand at that time for Sugarland.  I had the distinct pleasure of setting the fireworks off!  Couldn't have been more exciting!  That was until I found out one of the shells didn't explode and fell about three feet from us.  YIKES!  Thanks to that video guru for snapping some shots of us in action.

Ready for action

Right at Ground Zero

Gorgeous!

I spent Monday in the office working on advancing shows for New York State Fair.  I got to spend the evening off as an actual fair goer.  I don't get to do that too often.  I had a great time hanging out with friends and watching the free stage.  Below is my favorite stage on the fairgrounds.  I just love the architecture of it.  The Susan Knapp amphitheater typically features up and coming concert artists.  Monday night it was time for the regional cover band "Hairball" to take the stage.  They were amazing and had costume changes to represent the artist they were singing.  Prince and Bret Michaels made an "appearance".

Tuesday was such a great day.  We had Doobie Brothers and Kansas taking the grandstand.  This show was originally booked as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Doobie Brothers.  When LS cancelled we added Kansas to the bill.  We only had about 1500 refunds so obviously most people were there to see Doobies to begin with.  I just love a packed house with folks singing along with the band.  It's even better when they're louder than the band. =)  Looks like I'll hopefully be getting out of here a little early, 1:00AM!! The band was cleaned up and loaded in just under an hour and half.  It's always great when those little surprises happen.

Looking forward to another day off.  Not quite sure what to do with all these days off.  Oh yeah...finish up the next one. =)

Never estimate the power of prayer

I started out this morning praying that God help me get through this day.  Now that I'm at the end of the day I'm giving thanks for the answered prayer.  I had set myself up for an awful day.  Organization prior to today was not the best..we'll say.  A lot of things were delayed for thing or another but the minute the crew stepped off the busses we were rolling and it all came together very nicely.  We had a threat for showers but all just dissipated throughout the day.  The sun was shining and it was windy all day long.  It couldn't have been better!  They kept us very busy but everyone was very nice, polite and encouraging.  There were several band members roaming around during the day.  The most recognizable of the bunch, Rick Allen (the one-armed drummer) carried his murse around and basically people watched all day.  The ladies of Heart were looking as stunning as ever and those girls can still rip some vocals.  There are some 80's rock bands that aren't as washed up as the others. =)
We decided to take the opportunity this afternoon to go on the roof of the grandstand.  Given we were using a thrust (the little stage that jets off the front for the act to walk out into the crowd on) we wanted to get some shots so we could remember how we set it.  Those of you that know me well, know heights and I DON'T mix.  I was not going to pass this opportunity up but 75' in the air almost made me pee my pants.  We got some awesome shots and it was amazing to see the bulk of the fairgrounds from above.
However, I probably should have warn those down on the ground that we were going up.  Apparently some of the crew freaked out and thought we were snipers.  One actually just told me he was scared for my life. The photos and experience were definitely worth it!

We even caught a flash mob on Grand Ave, the main road running through the fairgrounds.

I even got to experience my first counterfeit item experience.  The local radio station had created a shirt that looked identical to the album cover for "Hysteria" and were selling them for charity.  With a stupid move the band ended up seeing it and that set off the train.  Eventually, we ended up having to confiscate the t-shirts.  Now I'm stuck with a bunch of ugly t-shirts.

I ended up making it to video world to catch about 15mins of the Heart show.  They just amaze me.  I was checking facebook when I read the news of the Indiana State Fair stage collapse.  No, Triangle Talent does not produce the Indiana State Fair.  I honestly can't explain the horror of what the bands, crew and patrons must have experience.  That is honestly my worst nightmare.  Sugarland, one of my favorite bands to work with, were the act performing.  Fortunately, by the grace of God, there was not an act on stage.  They were turning the stage over from Sara Bareilles and getting ready for Sugarland.  If my timing is right the accident happened four minutes after Sara/band left the stage.  I can't even describe what this was.  Until, I watched it online it hadn't sunk in.  Now I can't get it out.  After a few minutes of worrying about the band, fair and patrons I remember "CRAP we have Sugarland here tomorrow!".  Immediately, I was on the phone trying to get a report.  Nothing.  The agents or management couldn't get a hold of the band.  At the time of my writing this the death toll is four with many dozens injured.  It completely puts your day with a few hiccups into perspective.  My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and those injured or killed.  As well as Sugarland, crews, and fair staff.  I hope to never face this in my career because it pretty much just sucks being this close to it as it is.  At this point we're assuming all of Sugarland's gear is toast.  Which means they won't be doing a show tomorrow with us.  Fortunately, they do have Monday off and it's possible for us to work that into the grandstand.  So we're hoping they will choose to come on over.  They won't be able to even see what can be savaged fro
m the site for many, many days.  The stage and area are locked up as a crime scene.  It will be thoroughly reviewed to make sure that everything was the way it was supposed to be and the wind/weather was the only factor of the collapse.  If they do choose to the show, we will definitely make it happen!

So the moral of today's story is...never estimate the power of prayer.  I know I won't tonight.

Crazy Town--

I titled tonight's blog "Crazy Town" for three reasons.  1) Because Jason Aldean is on stage singing it right now and I can hear it clear as a bell from my office.  2) The Iowa State Fair was CRAZY today.  Jammed packed with country music lovin' cowboys and Sarah Palin lovin' (or hatin') people.  Or was it because of the gorgeous weather? 3) Getting ready for tomorrow's show has been a feat.  Most of my day was spent trying to track down the details for TOMORROWS show.  The act who shall remain nameless...until tomorrow at least was driving me bonkers with their lack of communication.  Once we get through the day we will be on the downhill slide from there.

Today was a great day.  I hadn't had the opportunity to work with Jason Aldean's crew but they were definitely organized, friendly and just made the day great for everyone.  We had the horseys on the track again but as soon as they were finished the stage was moved work continued.  Jason had two great support acts, Chris Young and Thompson Square.  Both were equally pleasant to work with.  No I didn't really meet any of them. I saw them while they were going in and out of their meet and greet and to and from the stage.  I thought that Aldean would be a big feller...nope..average size and kinda little.  But still a cutie patootie.  And what a show.  We had a sold out show over a month ago.  With selling 825 standing room only seats today alone we topped out at 11,412!  HUGE!!!  I'm typing this a little early so I can hopefully get some sleep tonight...and run out to watch a bit of the show.  Here's some photos of the day...can't wait to hear this crowd for the fireworks.  I'm sure they'll top last night.

By the way...the video crew tonight was amazing!!  Must have been professionals ;)

Everything is subject to change....

It's funny how details can just flip like a coin.  Some days you're heads up...the next your tail might as well be in the air.  I've declared my motto for the 2011 Mud and Dust Tour "EVERYTHING IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE".  The producers of Triangle Talent, Inc. learned this lesson Tuesday night.  After my safe travels (yes American Airlines proved me wrong..on the first leg at least) and greetings with my Iowian family I was set for another awesome year at the Iowa State Fair!  We all said everything was going quite smoothly and we shocked.  Turned out it was only the calm before the storm.

We soon found out that Lynyrd Skynyrd would more than likely be cancelling several of their shows- including their performance at the Iowa and Missouri State Fairs.  Of course when any act has to cancel it's not good, but a headliner such as them can throw you into a tizzy.  And that it did!  We were scrambling trying to find a new act to fill their spot.  Luckily, Kansas was able to step in and fill the spot at the Iowa State Fair.  I can't even go into detail about how my Wednesday went but I can definitely say I was in need of medication by the end of it!  Johnnie Van Zant, lead of the band, was admitted into the hospital last Saturday for a staph infection.  His doctor strongly advised he stay off the road for at least two weeks and cancel or reschedule all shows in the time period.  We wish Johnnie the best and a quick recovery.  I will miss working with the group again but look forward to our day with Kansas and the Doobie Brothers next Tuesday!  At the conclusion of Wednesday we received yet another spiraling email...Gavin DeGraw (support for Maroon 5 and Train) was assaulted...well really he was jumped, had the crap beat out of him and then was pushed in front of moving cab...on Monday morning.  We knew of the incident and were told that he was doing well.  Unfortunately, he was not recovering from his concussion, broken nose and black and blue bruises and his doctor's said he needed to stay off the road for a few weeks.  So...another one bites the dust.  Thankfully the agents filled his spot and we didn't have too much but than to inform his fans of his withdrawal from the show.  Seriously, if any more acts can't perform...I'm coming home =)  We wish Gavin the best.  I've worked with them several times and he's one of my personal favorites.

Enough of the downer stuff...on to opening day of the fair!  We had a grand ole' time.  Nothing better than starting a 10 day run with some great Christian music and awesome groups.  Casting Crowns and Sanctus Real were the easiest to work with.  Made my and my team's day so great.  We had the opportunity to get them involved in the Iowa Food Bank Association and the Iowa Soybean Association's CanStructure.  They are building a butter cow (google the butter cow of the state fair if you've never heard of this) out of canned goods.  Those cans plus the monetary donations collected throughout the fair will go back to the food bank and those in need.
To explain how great Casting Crowns are, I passed the photo opportunity by them.  Not only did they agree they also wanted to help.  They purchased $300 worth of canned foods and delivered them to the booth.  Just amazing to see that happen.  With over 7,000 people in the stands they put on an amazing show!
The best was setting the fireworks off right as their last song ended and hearing the crowd erupt!  That might be where the artists look for their energy, but I know it's where I find mine.  Melanie, the lovely tour manager for Casting Crowns gave me a CD autograhed by her and her husband (the lead singer, Mark) and with her message she noted Proverbs 3:5-6.  5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.  Not so upset over yesterday's trauma after that.

I can't forget to mention the Presidential candidates on the grounds.  I didn't see them but plenty knew they were here.  I guess I'm supposed to be looking for Sarah Palin tomorrow.  Fun stuff

Looking forward to tomorrow with Jason Aldean!

Flat Stanley visits Louisville, KY!

For those of you who aren't aware of who Flat Stanley is, you might recognize him in the photos below.  The Flat Stanley Project was started in 1995 by Dale Hubert, a third grade schoolteacher in London, Ontario, Canada. Students begin by reading the book, Flat Stanley, and becoming acquainted with the story. Then they make paper "Flat Stanleys" and are mailed to other people who are asked to treat the figure as a visiting guest and document his experiences.  Stanley and the journal are then returned to the student, who takes the project back to school to share with their class.

I was surprised several weeks ago when Flat Stanley arrived from Branson, MO.  Josh's son, Jaden is in kindergarten and they were doing the project.  Jaden thought it would be cool for Stanley to visit Louisville.  I created a fun photo album of my experiences with Stanley.  I, of course, went a little over board in carrying "the piece of paper" with me everywhere I went.  I defintely received a few looks but enjoyed sharing the project with several others.  I had blast and was thrilled to be a part of the project.

Sara and I at the start of the Anthem 5K

**February 28, 2011**

Sara is trying to focus on being healthy. She tries to eat well and exercise daily. Part of her exercise plans have been to walk in organized races. She took me on her first race of the year.

We started the race at ‘Louisville Slugger Field’. The Louisville BATS play at this baseball stadium. They are the field team for the Cincinnati Reds.

We walked through downtown Louisville and completed the ‘Anthem 5K’. A 5K is 3.1 Miles!

Sara and I at end of 3.2 Miles!

Sara plays bingo with her friends on Saturday nights.  I’ve never played bingo before.  While Sara didn’t win, it was still entertaining and fun!!
Watching them add the base of the glass

**March 5, 2011**

One of Louisville’s hot tourist spots is Glassworks. You can blow your own glass objects like pumpkins, wine glasses, vases and much more. Sara went to make a wine glass and took me along. It was so interesting to see them form a glass from a blob of glass.

Sara took me by the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory.  Slugger has been created the popular brand since 1884.  Babe Ruth used a Louisville Slugger to hit his last home run as a NY Yankee.  The “largest bat in the world” stands outside of the museum and factory.  It weighs 68,000lbs and is six stories tall.  I felt small beside it!
Mile 6!  Only .2 to go
**March 12, 2011**

Sara and I walked another race today! The Rodes City Run is a 10K. It was much longer than the first one but we still had a great time! We completed 6.2Miles!!

They just built a brand new basketball arena in downtown Louisville last year.  Since it opened in November they’ve had many large concerts come to town and a successful season for the Louisville Cardinals.  Sara took me to my first concert, Lady Gaga!!  We had a great time and enjoy the show.

**March 21, 2011**
Sara took me to one of the historical places in Louisvlle, let alone Kentucky!  Churchill Downs is home to Thourghbred racing and the Kentucky Derby.  The twin spires in the background here are iconic to the racing community.
